John Brucato, founder of San Francisco Farmer's market authored "The Farmer Goes to Town; the Story of San Francisco's Farmer's Market published 1948. I dont know if he mentions any Ustica names but it might be a long shot.
Another of his publications (1992)is entitled "A Sicilian in America." Unfortunately, Mr. Brucato passed away a couple of years ago. He may have had records of the history of farming reaching to San Jose. It might be interesting to contact his survivors for the possibilty of 19th Century information in his archives/library. Amazon.com and Alibris.com have one if not both of these books.
