Thanks Diane for the input. But my question has to do with the fact that "IN" is actually a part of these last names ... example INGARGIOLA, INGRASSO etc. Your ancestor who married a CAVERNA is designated "in CAVERNA " but her husband's last name remained "CAVERNA". What I'm trying to track down is the meaning of "IN" as part of the surname itself. But thanks again for the response.
