Hi Steve, spot" but I even asked my Italian colleagues here at work and they can't explain what the intent of that name might have been. Perhaps it was a nickname for someone that had a funny unusual meaning that has been lost to time. Other favorites of mine are Bevelaqua "drinks water", Occhipinti "painted eyes" and Mangiapane "eats bread". Another similar surname is Salataformaggio "jumps the cheese". Also saltire is the Italian verb for jump, so it is not neccesarily Spanish in origin.
