Thank you for your detailed reply. It helps paint a picture of what life was like during that fateful migration -- I'm glad they made it.

It also helps when researching the family tree to understand what was happening at the time. Many in my family were listed as Oyster men. I imagine it was that trade that brought them to Ustica and ultimately to New Orleans. Working in the sea in th ose days would be like working in the airling industry today -- providing opportunities for travel to far away ports.
